Throughout our journey, we saw a few impact hubs in Milan, Berlin, Barcelona, and Stockholm. Before ending our third London coworking tour, we visited a special Impact Hub: the first ever opened in the world, where everything started.
We went there to meet Debbie who is the Head of Partnerships at Impact Hub Islington. We knew Debbie from Berlin but never got a chance to see her in “her” space, when the opportunity presented itself, we jumped on it.
The path to reach the space is special, we went all the way up the stairs of the old warehouse to find the entrance door of Impact Hub Islington. As we opened the door, we discovered a vibrant coworking space. Everyone around was busy working, making a phone call, or meeting with their fellow colleagues, all that while an event was going on at the event space. We went to the kitchen and sat down with Debbie to chat about the place as well as COWORKIES. During our conversation, we understood our common ground: make an impact while having wellbeing at work. For Impact Hub, the impact is social. This is their main focus and also why they started: to let like-minded people have a place where they can meet, network and make a difference through their work. With COWORKIES, we follow the same logic but online. We want to give the like-minded community of coworkers a platform where they can meet and collaborate to build better teams, better ideas and projects.
To get back to Impact Hub Islington, we also became aware during our conversation with Debbie of the key role this place played in inspiring the other, more than 80 Impact Hubs that are today opened all over the world. Many initiatives started in Islington, were replicated in other Impact Hub’s such as the leaf-shaped tables to encourage conversation and a reception area where members take turns serving as “host” for the place. We also learned that soon enough, the place is going to change.
A new home.
2017 is going to be a special year for Impact Hub Islington. After 11 years at Torrent Street, the coworking space is going to move to a new location few blocks away from the original one. If, like us, you are curious to see how it looks, follow the site visit right here.
If there is a word that summarizes our meeting at Impact Hub Islington it would be special. Visiting the very first space, learning that soon it will change location and learning that Debbie, our host, will move on to new design adventures gave to our “tourist” selfie a particular feeling. We decided to call it “collector.” 🙂
