Flux, coworking by Microsoft

After coworking made by a real estate developer, after coworking made by a non-profit organization, after coworking made by students, Helsinki brought us to Flux a coworking made by Microsoft. Flux is one of the latest addition to Helsinki’s coworking landscape.

We met Annie, who works as part of the Operations team there and who knows Helsinki’s startup scene in and out. Located 1 ½ street away from M.O.W, Flux aims at bringing together the startup and entrepreneur community to let them “network and explore their business idea.” Flux does not define itself as a coworking space per say nor as an accelerator. The premises is a playground where entrepreneurs can experience and play with Microsoft latest technologies but also with several types of 3D-printers, borrow Arduino boards or just tinker in heir makers corner.

The idea of Flux came from San Francisco, where Microsoft opened a similar concept called Reactor. With Flux, Microsoft opens the world’s first successor of the US version.

Flux offers one floor of an open work environment, meeting rooms, communal areas where you can play video games, drink fresh coffee or prepare yourself some food. The place can easily transform itself into an event space where workshops, round tables, pitch events and more are organized. The great thing about Flux is that it is free for anyone interested in coming to work for few hours or a day. You can also book for a 30 minutes slot, one of their beautiful meeting room.

Nevertheless, if you are based in Helsinki and wish to work permanently from Flux it is also possible. Startups can apply to become a permanent resident. As stated on Flux website, “The ideal startup is very early stage, technology related, startup that is looking to spend 1 to 4 months in Flux, and use it as a stepping stone to get bigger.” If your startup is selected to work from Flux permanent desks area, you will have the opportunity to meet evangelists and fellow startups who are also part of the in-house program.

We ended up our tour taking a selfie in front of the custom-made (and very cool) Flux light. We highly recommend Flux to any of you, dear startup founders, who are or plan to be, in Helsinki.
